Amber Whicker

Hi, I’m Amber Whicker and I grew up with my brother being profoundly deaf. The ESDCS has been a huge part of our lives and I joined the committee myself around 10 years ago to be a part of giving other families the experiences and memories I remember having growing up with a deaf sibling!

I started learning British Sign Language when I was just 3 with the rest of the family and eventually went on to study BSL at college and then university. I volunteered at Hamilton Lodge School for the deaf for a year supporting pupils in class which was a fantastic experience and I have a toddler who has had fluctuating hearing loss since birth and uses sign language alongside her speech and wears a hearing aid (when she wants to!)
